James Durbin Empire-Springfield, VA 1/23/14
The first thing James Durbin did when he walked on stage was hand his bandanna to a star struck young fan in the front row. This up close and personal experience was a world away from the brightly lit stages of American Idol. James, a season 10 finalist, called this “a living room tour” and said he enjoyed the intimate relationship he builds with the audience on these smaller stripped down acoustic shows.
At Empire, a small strip mall venue in Springfield, VA, Durbin proved that even without all of the glamorous production of a top TV show he is an incredibly talented singer. Standing just a few inches away from the stage, I experienced this first hand.
To be honest, after standing through several opening acts in the cold venue I was ready for the night to be over, but when Durbin took the stage I was mesmerized. He played for almost 90 minutes, mixing originals and covers, and the time just seemed to fly by. The venue even seemed to warm up as the surrounding fans sang along and cheered. His smooth vocals and incredible range impressed me as he performed original songs, mostly smooth pop numbers, delivered with emotions that never felt forced. The audience was even treated to a few hits that he’d performed on Idol, as well as songs off his new album, Celebrate, due to be released April 2014.
As beautiful as his performance was it was his humble presence and ability to connect with his fans that most impressed me. Even after his set James met with fans for close to an hour, giving them his undivided attention while signing autographs and answering questions. Durbin proves a truly talented artist can deliver an amazing performance with nothing but himself and a guitar. And that after the star treatment of Hollywood he can still be accessible to his fans. James Durbin truly deserves the title: American Idol.
James Durbin’s acoustic tour continues through February 15th, dates and tickets can be found at http://www.durbinrock.com/tour-dates/
